Within easy reach of Applegrove Cottage you will find a wealth of outdoor activities and places of interest to enjoy, a few of each are listed here:

Walking Through Caledonian Pine forests, along rivers, around tranquil lochs or along soft, sandy beaches at Nairn and Findhorn on the Moray coast. Walking routes and trail details available from Cairngorm Bike and Hike, Boat of Garten and Aviemore and Grantown on Spey Tourist Information Centres.

Biking Lots of routes for all levels of ability - easy tracks locally - visit Cairngorm Bike and Hike for anything to do with bikes including bike hire. Plus more advanced tracks to thrill even the most proficient rider at Wolftrax at Laggan.

Wildlife Watching The Cairngorms National Park is home to a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Visit RSPB Loch Garten from April to August to see Ospreys nesting, Watch Pine Martens and Badgers from Speyside Wildlife's exclusive hide and experience a Rothiemurchus themed Safari by foot or Land Rover

Fishing The River Spey offers some of the best Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout fishing in Scotland. Licences for beats at Grantown and Boat of Garten are available from Strathspey Estate Office. Rothiemurchus has stocked lochs and salmon/sea trout fishing on the River Spey. Abernethy Angling Association offers permits on the River Spey. Mortimers of Speyside in Grantown on Spey sell permits, equipment, clothing, accessories and Strathspey Angling Improvement Association offers useful information about fishing locally.

Water Sports Sailing, windsurfing, canoeing - all available on Loch Morlich and Loch Insh where equipment can be hired and tuition is available.

Horse Riding Horse riding and organised trekking for all levels of ability are available from Carrbridge Stables and Rothiemurchus.

Clay Shooting Rothiemurchus Shooting Ground is one of the best clay shooting facilities in the UK with exceptional facilities and top class tuition. Whether a complete beginner (12 years+) or a crack shot you’ll have a sensational time. - full instruction available.

Quad Bike Trekking Exciting and fun and led by fully experienced guides, you'll be taken along a network of tracks and trails around Rothiemurchus.

Sleddog Trekking The only Sleddog Museum of its kind in the UK, based in Glenmore Forest, offers kennel tours and the chance to lead your own 12-dog team on a trek.

Golf A good number of quality courses can be found within a 15-mile radius, especially at Boat of Garten, Grantown on Spey, and Spey Valley

Winter Sports Nearby Cairngorm Mountain and the Lecht both offer winter skiing and snowboarding plus equipment hire and tuition if needed.

Swimming Two of the larger hotels in Aviemore have swimming pools, Coylumbridge and Macdonald Aviemore Resort, plus in Inverness there is a large pool with wave machine and flumes.

Cairngorm Mountain - Travel on the funicular railways and experience the view from the top, enjoy a coffee or lunch in the Ptarmigan Restaurant, visit the exhibition and the mountain garden.

Cairngorm Reindeer Centre - Britain's only herd of reindeer, found free ranging in te Cairngorm Mountains. These extremely tame and friendly animals are a joy so go and see them and feed them too!


Highland Wildlife Park - Discover Scotland's wildlife from eagles to wolves. from past to present.

Strathspey Steam Railway - A fascinating insight into the age of steam with 10-mile steam trips through 'Monarch of the Glen' country - right on the doorstep of Applegrove Cottage. Great for dining out whilst enjoying a traditional train journey.

Highland Folk Museum - Enter the world of the Highlander at its Kingussie and Newtonmore sites.
